Tony was one of those rare individuals that everyone wanted to be friends with. He had a scientific mind with a flair for artistry. Tony was always passionate about his many and varied interests from the artistry of his railroad spike sculptures to skydiving.. There were years were he loved nothing more than scuba diving off the Jersey coast looking for treasures or lobster, whichever came first. There are lots of anecdotes of times with Tony, but the one that sticks in my mind has to do with our adventures in Iceland. In those days the Icelanders would go on strike every summer, and if you didn’t get out before the strike you were stuck there until the strike was settled and Loftleder started to fly again. Although Tony was booked on a flight before the strike, he decide to stay an extra couple of days and was stuck in Iceland. Although he professed that it was work related I often wondered if he really just didn’t want to return to Whippany. As I remember it the Washington Navy eventually got him a seat on military aircraft back to the US. The last time I saw Tony was at one of the Ocean System luncheons before the pandemic. We talked about his bowl turning, and I asked him for a lesson in sharpening a bowl turning gouge. I regret that I never followed through to get that lesson.

Hi Dave - It's so nice to hear from you! I'm sure you would have many more "interesting" stories to tell! I have been pulling together a collection of old pictures for the Celebration of Life, and what a story they tell...
Thanks for sharing yours.

MaryAnn and the Whalen family. So sad to hear of Tony's passing. When I joined NJ Woodturners almost 15 yrs ago Tony was like a mentor, always helpful, full of good humor and better advice. When we had a demo at a meeting Tony was always at the next meeting with his version of the demo! It was an honor for me to follow Tony's footsteps when he stepped down as club secretary. His (and your) smiling face(s) will be missed at future meetings. Rest in peace Tony!

Mary Ann, Roger and I are so sad to hear of Tony's passing. Such a nice person. We remember him from our Bell Labs days. Good times. We went to Lakewood once to watch him sky diving. I also remember him on his motorcycle. May he rest in peace. Sincerest condolences.

Tony was my roommate at Totally Turning for a couple of years. We had lots of windshield time together and I would catch him coming in and out of demos with a hundred ideas and notes.
One night over dinner, I made a comment about the learning curve for woodturning and the next meet, Tony walked up to me with this plaque, which has hung in my shop behind the lathe since then.
I'll miss him immensely. Travel well my friend.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Tony. He was a terrific Woodturner and gave a lot of his time to the club. For one of the club challenges Tony made a breakfast plate that had scrambled eggs bacon and bread all made from wood but it looked good enough to eat. He will be missed

Thanks, Maurice - he will definitely be missed! I think Tony's daughter will be glad to hear that you like the piece that she has in her kitchen!

who we are:
Tuttle Funeral home was designed as a funeral home by funeral home architects and designers. Unllike many funeral homes that were originally old homes and then were converted into funeral homes.
Though it was designed as a funeral home, it still provides the warm comforting feeling of a home, but with more space and an open feeling.
