It's very hard in so few words to articulate the positive impact Coach Wallace had on me. I played 3 years of basketball for Coach at PV (80'-82'). He was very tough and always pushed us to be better. Coach cared deeply about his guys and devoted so much of his free time in the off season as well to help our team improve. We had no choice but to get better. Just before our senior year, one newspaper referred to our team (PV) as "the 98 pound weakling" of the NNJIL". We played in a very tough conference and were coming off a 5-15 season. It was Coach's leadership and drive that molded our squad into what we became - a team no one really wanted to play. Coach gave us all the basketball knowledge to be successful, but he did something else. He instilled so much confidence in us that we ultimately became one of the most mentally tough teams I've ever been around. If you were playing PV, you had better pack a lunch because it was going to be a long hard day for you. The success I and the team had during our senior year was clearly attributed to what our mentor preached - dedication, commitment, work ethic and his famous words to me; "don't cheat yourself". Be the best you can be. To this day, every place I've been since HS, hangs the poem, "The Man in the Glass". Coach Wallace gave the poem to me. It serves as a cherished memory of what I accomplished and a reminder of the kind of relentless effort it takes to be successful. Coach's lessons were priceless. His words of wisdom have lived within me to this very day and I've since paid that forward to my children and to other young athletes I've coached. Rest easy coach, I have no doubt we'll meet up again. Love, #22. Bob Kowalskie

Mr. Wallace was my basketball coach and teacher, the life lessons he taught; commitment, work ethic, accountability are still with me today. He had a tremendous impact on my life. He cared deeply for each of us on the team as he did for all his students.
When I am coaching my daughter’s basketball team his is the voice I hear in my head.
Thank you Coach
Rest in Peace

John was the best of us. We were together for 6 years as basketball coaches. He always had to go to the bathroom before a game. We both got sick but he beat me to the bathroom before tip off every time. We both would join in at practice ( which lasted 4 hours) to play defense and take the charge to fire up our players. WE HAD THE BEST KIDS ON THE PLANET. On Thanksgiving Day in our first year together the team broke into the small gym. The janitor called me and let me know. I came down and said " I guess we have to practice 7 days a week".
John and I were perpetually pessimistic and thought we would never win a game given the league we played in (NNJIL). In one week in 1977 we beat the three top county teams and won the county championship. Our feet didn't touch the ground for months. God had been good to us. John deserved it and I was never at his level in any measurable standard. None of us were. He had no enemies. I prayed for him and for my friends and players every day of my life. In recent times I asked God for just " 5 minutes of sunshine in John's life". I would send baseball trivia to him and knew he could get them all.
Maryann and John asked me to babysit the girls once. We ate junk food and watched a questionable movie. Last request for my help. THANK YOU for sharing John Wallace with me for a bit. He was the best of us.

John was one of the most influential men in my life. From the very first time I met him, I liked and respected him. His amazing combination of intelligence, humor, toughness, and compassion left an everlasting impression upon me and motivated me to be a better student, a better basketball player, and a better man.
As I transitioned from being his student and player to his assistant coach and friend, my love and respect for him continued to grow. The times that we spent together watching sports, painting houses, playing tennis, eating pizza or Chinese food, sifting through the Baseball encyclopedia, trading trivia questions, playing pool, and, of course, going to the Yankee games were among the very best times of my life!
As incredible as John has been in my life, the impact he had on his family is even greater. His integrity, work ethic, and love will never be forgotten by his family or friends for generations! John lived his life the right way and he was one of the best men I have ever known!
Sincerely,
John Sterling

My condolences to Maryanne and John's family. He was most certainly a class act well beyond most people. He will be remembered most for the impact he had on students and fellow faculty at P.V. He always set an example that few could match. In my lifetime I have been involved with very many educators and John was certainly the best that I have ever known. Rest in peace Sir.

Mr. Wallace was my history teacher in the late 1980's. He fostered a deep love of learning, mixed with humor and created a healthy classroom debate atmosphere. Of all of the classes that I had at PV, I clearly remember his the most. He opened our eyes to the world and had a profound impact on my life.
I wish your family peace at this very sad time. But please know that your husband, dad and grandfather, impacted this world in extraordinary ways.

John is a member of a great generation of educators that are truly missed. He was highly respected by our staff and the community and our students always knew that John had their best interests at heart. Meeting with John on a regular basis I always left his office with a bit of wisdom, good advice, always a good laugh and sometimes a little bit of humble pie! He will be truly missed.

John came into observe my USH II class. I was teaching about growing up in the 50s. I showed a clip from the Marlon Brando “The Wild Bunch”. After the class was over he told me to sit down and put the movie back on and we watched another 30 minutes. He was the best boss ever.

who we are:
Tuttle Funeral home was designed as a funeral home by funeral home architects and designers. Unllike many funeral homes that were originally old homes and then were converted into funeral homes.
Though it was designed as a funeral home, it still provides the warm comforting feeling of a home, but with more space and an open feeling.
