Obituary of John Gene Aymil

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of John Gene Aymil, a beloved husband, father & grandfather, at the age of 85 on May 15, 2024, in Summerville, South Carolina.

John was born October 12, 1938, in Rome, New York, to the late Mary Aymil.  He spent his early years in Manhattan before settling in Rockaway, New Jersey where he raised his three children with his first wife Janet (Hesse) Aymil until her passing.  John attended Columbia University earning a Professional Engineering license.  He worked as a mechanical engineer at Allied Signal and then dedicated the next 25 years of his career to BASF, retiring at the age of 62.  It was during this time at BASF that he met his current wife Carol (Faber) Aymil.

Throughout his life, John was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to various countries in Europe and throughout the United States.  His favorite destination was Aruba, where he owned a timeshare and would visit every year.  Eventually, John and Carol settled in Summerville, South Carolina, outside of Charleston.

John was admired for his astute judgment and unwavering integrity.  He was passionate about constructing and navigating radio-controlled boats, as well as his love for reading history books and historical fiction novels.  John loved to sing, and his baritone voice often was heard at various events.  Affectionally known as Pop Pop to his nine adored grandchildren, John had a special talent for creating imaginative stories that captivated their hearts.

John will be cherished in the hearts of his loving wife, Carol, his daughter Debbie Grant, his sons Chris and John Francis (Stacy) as well as his step children Trish Doerr (Stefan), Diane Stanilious (Scott) and John Faber (Lala).  He will also be dearly missed by his nine grandchildren – Mia, Katie, Ethan, Sydney, Melissa, Ryleigh, Hailey, Nicolas and John Ryan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite charity, St. Judes Online Donations - St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org)
