Obituary of Saverio J. Zarra

Saverio “Sam” J. Zarra, 89 of Rockaway Township, passed away Friday, January 22nd, 2016 following a short illness. Born in Newark, Sam lived in Essex County before moving to Rockaway Township in 1975. He was a graduate of the former Newark College of Engineering and worked for almost 30 years at Picatinny Arsenal where he was Chief of the Loading Division, overseeing 1,600 employees. Sam retired from Picatinny in 1986 and became active in NARFE (National Active & Retired Federal Employees) where he served as Membership Chair, Service Center officer and 1st Vice President of the William J. Ryan Chapter 424. He is survived by four children, Joseph of Nutley, Robert of West Caldwell, Maria San Filippo of Wayne and Leslie Killeen of Union and three step-children, Lynn Nasal of SC, Robin Lally of Dover and Sean Lally of Lake Hopatcong. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His wife, Claire, died in 1997. Visitation Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 3:30-7:30 pm, Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 State Route 10 West, Randolph (www.tuttefh.com). Funeral Mass, Thursday, January 28, 2016 10 am, St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Wharton. Entombment to follow at Locust Hill Mausoleum, Dover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, 14 Commerce Drive, #301, Cranford, NJ 07016.
