Obituary of Gertrude Jill Hartmann

On Wednesday, April 15, 2021, Gertrude Jill Hartmann (nee Douds), wife of the late William R. (Bob) Hartmann, passed away at the age of 81.

Gertrude, more commonly known as Jill, was born in Lexington, Kentucky on November 21, 1939 to Ben R. Douds and Mary Jane (Kindig) Douds.  At 3 years of age, after her parent’s divorce, Jill and her mother moved north to Bogota, New Jersey.  Mary Jane eventually was remarried to Thomas D. Izzo.

Jill graduated from Bogota High School in 1957, She then studied Medical Assisting and Medical Office Management and gradated from Mandl College (Allied Health in NYC)  in 1958. 

In 1959 at the age of 19, Jill and Bob married.  Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.  Jill worked for the Department of the Army during Bob’s military service.  In 1964, Jill and Bob settled in Fair Lawn NJ where they raised 5 children.   Jill was most recently a resident of the Paramus NJ Veteran’s Home.

Jill and Bob purchased a 7-Eleven franchise in Saddle Brook NJ in 1987, which they owned and operated until their retirement in 2005.  They loved to travel and were fortunate to visit many different states and countries during their time as convenience store owners.

Jill is survived by her son Barry Hartmann (Deirdre) of Succasunna NJ, son Kurt Hartmann of Phoenix AZ, daughter Julie Murphy (Michael) of Wayne NJ and daughter Stacie Bohr (Jason) of Long Valley NJ.  Jill is also survived by her sister Judy (Izzo) Olsen of Ramsey NJ and 11 grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her daughter Carolyn Hartmann and 2 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Thursday April 22, 2021, at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 NJ-10, Randolph, NJ 07869 (www.tuttlefh.com).  The funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Friday April 23rd at 10 am, followed by interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester NJ.
