Obituary of Kristian Davis Nielsen
Kristian ‘Kris’ Davis Nielsen, age 61, passed away unexpectedly on September 29, 2020.
Born November 1, 1958 at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. Kris lived in the Azores;
Amarillo, Texas; and Ogden, Utah as a child before the family settled in Bountiful, Utah.
Before graduating from Bountiful High School in Utah, Kris worked for a summer on a pineapple
picking farm in Hawaii. It was during that summer that he realized he had a desire to serve a
mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Chile Santiago North
Mission. Upon his return he worked for the Church in their Exhibits Division whilst attending the
University of Utah.
Kris and Jeanette met in 1980 marrying in 1981. They welcomed his son, Josh in 1982, and
daughter, Kimi in 1983. While living in Utah Kris sang with Mormon Youth Symphony and
Chorus and served as a bass section leader, working for the Hotel Utah, then the Westin Hotel
Utah, as a purchasing agent. The family moved to Newport, Oregon in 1984 along with
Jeanette’s parents who emigrated from Zimbabwe to the USA, and who have lived with them
since. While they were living in Newport, Jamie, 1986, and Karen, 1989, joined the family.
At the young age of 29, Kris was called to serve as the Bishop of the Newport Ward where he
served until the family moved to Orange, then Anaheim, California, where they lived for 17
years.
Kris loved to serve and would do so with diligence wherever he was called. He was especially
loved by the youth of the Church and would usually spend his yearly vacation attending Girls’
Camp and Scout Camp. He also enjoyed being the drummer for a band with his dear friends
and performing at local gigs.
Kris worked for Travelers Insurance and AIG specializing in workers compensation. It was his
work with AIG that took the family to New Jersey in 2006. In New Jersey, Kris served as a
Bishop of the Ledgewood Ward, a Counselor in the Morristown, New Jersey Stake and a
Branch President for the Spanish speaking Hackettstown Branch of the Church. Kris also
served for several years in the Bishops’ Storehouse in Piscataway, something he really loved
doing.
Through his dedication and hard work Kris was able to provide for his family all without having a
college degree. Every time he would go back to school, Kris would be called to a position in the
Church and would forego his schooling to serve more fully. Kris finally graduated with his
Bachelor of Science in Business in May of this year, something of which he was so proud.
Kris loved to serve everyone he met and made friends wherever he went. He loved his Savior,
Jesus Christ.
Kris, a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and friend, joins his father, Donald, stepfather
Vernon Kunert, and sister, Michelle. He leaves behind his wife, Jeanette; children Josh (Candy)
Nielsen and their children Noah and Gavin; Kimi (Jeremy) Davenport and their children
Brinkley, Caelen, Noelle, and Quinn; Jamie (Marco) Vergara and their children Eliana, Gabriella,
Anthony, and Micah; and Karen (Roy) Juarez and their son Remy; mother, Shirley, and siblings
Kendall, Ernest, Katrin, and Michael; father and mother-in-law, John (Bob) and Joan Breakwell.
In lieu of flowers or similar please donate to your favorite charity as it was always his passion to serve others.
