Obituary of Joan Louise Frick

Please share a memory of Joan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joan Louise (Saar) Frick, 87, of Randolph, NJ passed away on April 6, 2020 at The Oaks Rehabilitation Center in Denville, NJ. Joan grew up in Franklin Square, Long Island, NY and attended Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, NY. Upon graduation in 1949 she started her business career as a Secretary for McGraw Hill Book Publishing Company in New York City and advanced to the position of Executive Secretary for Donald C. McGraw, company president. On April 5, 1953, Joan married the love of her life, Ralph, after knowing him since the 4th grade. Joan left her position at McGraw Hill in April 1955 to join Ralph who was stationed with the US Army in Wiesbaden, Germany where she was employed as a Secretary by the US Air Force European Command. Upon returning to the States, Joan became a homemaker and raised her four children. Being a lifelong Lutheran, Joan has always been actively involved in many church activities. For the past 44 years, Joan has been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Dover, NJ, and involved in Senior Ministry, Meals on Wheels (as a driver and treasurer), Fruit for Greystone, Sunday School Teacher, Altar Guild, Newsletter Team, Greeter and Usher among others. One of Joan’s favorite activities was league bowling which she enjoyed for more than 40 years. Joan also enjoyed cooking batches of her delicious brownies and mailed them as far as California to family and friends. Another favorite activity was playing cards and board games with her family. For many years, Grandma looked forward to planning a Grandkid’s Day: a day-trip activity which created treasured memories and time spent with her grandchildren. Joan was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved attending and supporting her family at scouting functions, sports events, band concerts and other school and extracurricular activities. Joan was very proud to claim the title of domestic engineer and professional volunteer! Joan is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Ralph Frick of Randolph, NJ; children Ellen Studwell of Annandale, NJ, Gary Allen and wife, Kim, of Richmond, KY, Karen Harding and husband, Vince, of Ringwood, NJ, Joanne Moore and husband, Will, of Wallops Island, VA; 10 grandchildren – Jessica, Alyssa, Nicole, Adam, Jesi, Kristen, Rachael, Megan, Chelsea and Kyle; and 5 great-grandchildren – Riley, Mark, Dorothy, Grace and Joey; and Goddaughter, Barbara Lindsey. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Saar, and two grandsons, Gregory and Dylon. Due to the current restrictions on large gatherings, a memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Joan’s memory to the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 123 E. Blackwell Street, Dover, NJ 07801 or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family is thankful for the care given to Joan by Dr. Philip Scaduto, and the staff at The Oaks Rehabilitation Center. The family also is thankful for the many prayers and well wishes during Joan’s recent illness and during this time of loss. Joan will be forever remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and dedicated grandmother and great-grandmother. She is loved and will be dearly missed by her entire family and many friends.
