Obituary of George J. Post
George J. Post, 94 of Rockaway Township, NJ passed away Monday, October 22, 2018. He was born in Wharton, NJ on July 3, 1924 on what is now Picatinny Arsenal to the late Charles, Sr. and Mary (Gall) Post.
He attended the Mount Pleasant School and Wharton Public Schools and was a resident of the Dover/Rockaway area his entire life. George enlisted in the US Navy in 1943. He and four of his brothers as well as a foster brother, served honorably during WWII. He arrived at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1943 and served aboard the USS Boston (CA69) as a Storekeeper Third Class through 1946. He saw action at Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Saipan and the Philippines. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with nine battle stars, the American Theater Medal and the Phillippine Liberation Ribbon with two battle stars and was a witness to the Japanese surrender in the Sea of Japan. He was a Plankowner with the USS Boston Shipmates.
Upon his return in 1946 he learned his craft with Bellusch and Sons and was a self- employed general contractor and custom home builder in Morris County for over 60 years. He was the contractor of choice for many homeowners in the Wharton/Dover area and was the primary contractor for the Jack & Jill Dairy stores.
George was a member of Acacia Lodge F&AM and attained the 32nd degree. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and was a former member of the Dover Elks BPOE 782.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Beverly A. Miller in 2015, his siblings and their spouses: Joseph G, (Nina), Lillian Garrison Baker, Mary (Frank) Conover, Charles, Jr. (Elsie), Julia R, (Claude) Apgar, Zigmond Z, (Elma), John G, (Hazel), Alice V., Louis F, (Gloria), Edward A., William R. Sr. He was also predeceased by his former wives, Alice (Chambers Post) Polwin and Joan M. (Reynolds) Post.
George is survived by his daughter Cynthia K. and Jeff Bidlack of Lockport, NY, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter, a nephew Edward Post, numerous nieces and nephews and his companion, Alba Neggia of Dover and her family.
Arrangements are by the Tuttle Funeral Home, Randolph, NJ. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, October 24, 2018, 4:00-7:00PM and will include a Masonic Service at 7:00PM. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Thursday, October 25, 2018 beginning at 10:00AM. Burial at Locust Hill Cemetery, Dover, NJ immediately following. Your flowers are welcome.
