Obituary of Ruth L. Singleton
Please share a memory of Ruth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ruth L. Singleton, a lifelong resident of Rockaway, NJ, died on Friday, July 26, 2013 at Merry Heart Health Care Center in Succasunna at 89 years old. Ruth was born in Dover, NJ in 1924, to Robert A. Lowery and Florence Phillips Lowery. She graduated from Morristown High School and earned a degree in education at Trenton State where she developed lifelong friendships. She taught in the Morristown School District and she was also employed by the Rockaway Township School System as a substitute teacher coordinator.
Ruth most enjoyed her role as a devoted wife and mother to her five children. Her greatest joys were her family and many dear friends, and road trips in her station wagons. She also had a love of flowers and music and was often found doing her chores and humming a tune.
Ruth was a dedicated lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dover, serving in the choir, vestry, and Service Club. For many years she was the driving force behind the church’s pasty sales. In 2003 she was recognized by The Diocese of Newark Commission on Aging in recognition of the many contributions to church and community. She and her husband were presented with the David Paul Hegg II 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Diocese. The American National Red Cross issued her a certificate on January 1, 1946 in recognition of meritorious personal service for serving as a nurse’s aide during WWII. She served the Rockaway Borough Home and School Association, Community Concerts, Inc., and Kenneth E. Hendrickson Chapter, Order of DeMolay, among many other organizations.
Much of her life she spent helping others; and she had a significant influence on those around her, particularly her children and grandchildren; and she will be missed greatly.
Ruth was predeceased in January 2013 by her husband of 65 years, Edwin B. Singleton. She is survived by her children: Nancy Adamczyk, Madison, NJ; Linda Jackson, Saranac Lake, NY; Robert Singleton, Palm Beach, FL; Marcia and Doug Zeek, Dover, NJ; Scott and Becke Singleton, Hamilton, NJ. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Karina and Brian Noyes, Trevor and Meghan Jackson, Tim Jackson, Roxie Zeek, Maddie Zeek, Hannah Singleton, and Jake Singleton.
