AGE: 84 - Rockaway Borough
Edward L. Miller passed Oct. 3, 2014 at Compassionate Care in Dover . He was born in Mansfield , NJ and lived in Rockaway Borough for 60 years. Mr. Miller was an engineer at Picatinny Arsenal for over 30 years.
Ed was the beloved husband, of 61 years, to Joan (Kepler) Miller and devoted father to Peter L. Miller and his wife Janice of Rockaway Township and late son Robert E. Miller. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kelly, Robert, Heather, Tanya along with three great grandchildren; his sister Catherine Murphy in Sidney , NY , his brother William in Dot Lake , Ak . and many nieces and nephews with whom he loved playing cards.
Ed served in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean War. He was an Auxiliary Police Officer for Civilian Defense and Civilian Disaster control, for the Borough of Rockaway from 1957 thru 1964. He also served as a Special Police Officer for the Borough of Rockaway from 1961 thru 1977. Ed was a member of the Rockaway Borough Fire Department from 1964 thru 1979, he progressed through the ranks from 1 st Lt. to Captain of Company #2. Years later he received a medal from the Jefferson Township Police Dept for performing the Heimlich maneuver on a man who was choking on a bone at the Jefferson House.
As a member of the Rockaway Borough Senior Citizen group he helped form the Borough of Rockaway Historical Committee. Originally he was the acting Secretary/Vice President and later became President. Through his leadership the Historical Committee erected new Honor Rolls for all wars in which Rockaway residents served.
He is a member of the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways as well as the Rockaway Borough Cream of the Crop Seniors and the American Legion Rockden Post 175.
Ed was honored with the St. Francis Living Treasures Award in 2012 for his involvement and leadership in the community.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 5 th , 2014, 2:00-6:00PM at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 State Route 10 West, Randolph ( www.tuttlefh.com ). Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 6, 2014, 11:00AM at The United Methodist Church of the Rockaways. Interment to follow at Locust Hill Cemetery , Dover .
