ALICE M. SUNSHINE
Randolph, NJ
Feb. 8, 1930-Apr. 5, 2014
Alice Mae Sunshine (nee Hockenbary) passed away April 5, 2014, at age 84 after a long illness. Born in Nutley to Wesley and Pearl Hockenbary, she was a resident of Randolph since 1943.
An avid reader, Alice never wanted to stop learning. After her three children were grown, she attended County College of Morris and earned an associate degree, even making the dean’s list. Dismayed that she didn’t have music lessons as a child, she signed herself up for lessons and learned to play the organ.
Her concern for others was manifested in her years of service as Morris County chairwoman for the New York City Fresh Air Fund. She was president of the Randolph High School Marching Band Parents, and helped create the marching band festival, which became an annual event. She was a member of the Women’s Association of the Mt. Freedom Presbyterian Church.
Alice loved to dance. Her vacations always included visits to family and friends. She became a supporter of the New Jersey Devils and was a member of the team’s fan club with her husband, Leonard.
She worked for AT&T Bell Labs in Whippany as a purchasing clerk until her retirement in 1992.
In addition to her devoted husband of 49 years, she is survived by her daughter Sherry Ross of West Orange; brother Richard and his wife Eileen of Randolph; sister-in-law Joan Hockenbary of Holiday, FL; brother Walter of Budd Lake; daughter-in-law Lorraine Ross and grandchildren Tyler and Chelsea of Flanders; five nieces and nephews, and many extended family members who will miss her warmth and her ready smile. She was predeceased by her sons Gary and Randy, her brother Wesley and her sister Evelyn.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April, 8, 2014, from 4:00PM – 8:00PM at the Tuttle Funeral Home (Tuttlefh.com) in Randolph, with a memorial service at 7:30 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you kindly consider a donation to the Interfaith Food Pantry, 2 Executive Drive, Morris Plains NJ 07960 (mcifp.org).
