Loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather
Sol Schwartz, 92, of Aventura, Florida, formerly of Dover, New Jersey, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the Aventura Hospital. Sol was born March 10, 1921, in Brooklyn, New York, the oldest son of Sam and Minnie Schwartz. His beloved wife of 65 years, Mae Schwartz, predeceased him by less than 3 months.
Sol enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, after the invasion of Pearl Harbor and served as a navigator/gunner on a Kingfisher OS2U plane onboard the USS Quincy through the end of WWII. He served in both the European and Asian Pacific theaters. After the war Sol returned to Brooklyn, got married and moved to New Jersey, where he and Mae raised their family. Sol was active with the Brotherhood of the Dover Jewish Center, the Jewish War Veterans and the Lions Club. He and his brother Hy owned the Economy Department Store in Stanhope for 30 years. In 1995, Sol and Mae moved their permanent residence to Florida.
Sol is survived by his daughters Meryl and husband Tom, Ellen and husband Joel, and Rhonda; his brother Joe; grandchildren Beth and husband Jason, Miriam, Scott, Amy and husband Randy, Gary, Jacob, Joshua; and great-grandchildren Jackson, Stella and Maeve.
The family will greet visitors at 11:30 AM, Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Tuttle Funeral Home 272 State Route 10 West, Randolph, New Jersey, 07869, (www.tuttlefh.com), followed by a funeral service at 12 noon. The family will be sitting shiva in Hillsborough on Thursday evening (7-9) and Friday afternoon (2-4). In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation in Sol's memory to a charity of your choice.
