Obituary of William E. Birchenough

William E. Birchenough of Dover passed away peacefully with family at his side at Morristown Memorial Hospital on August 13, 2012. He was 68. Bill was born in Newton to the late Arthur and Greta (Babe) on April 9th 1944. He grew up on a farm in Peters Valley/Walpack and graduated from Newton High School in 1962. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army and served his country with pride, including a year’s deployment in Vietnam. He returned to his home in Newton and was a Service Technician for Sears for next 33 years. Bill was a member of the Newton Fire Patrol for many years. He was also a Life Member of the Newton VFW Post 5360. He served as Vice Commander and also Commander. For the past 14 years, Bill has resided in Dover and worked independently on small engines. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 27 in Dover and presently served as the Vice-Commander.
Bill was predeceased by his brother Raymond. He is survived by his loving long-time companion Sue Hill with whom he lived. Three daughters: Wendy Hunter VanderMaas, Julie Hunter Presher and her husband Michael of Andover, and Barbara Dodson and her husband Michael of Catlett, VA; Four Sons: Jimmy and Kevin Birchenough of Branchville, Ed Edwards of Tannersville, PA, and Roger Hill of E. Hanover; Eighteen Grandchildren: Rebecca Presher, Connor, Alexandra and Ryan VanderMaas; Amanda, Cassy, and Chase Dodson; Stephen and Timothy Handelong, Kennedy Cummings; Lyndsey, Kaitlyn and Madison Edwards, and Jimmy, Kyra, Trevor, Kelsey, and Paige Birchenough; three brothers, Charlie of Wantage, Ronnie of Dingman’s Ferry, PA, Donald of Michigan and a sister Dorothy Richards of Honesdale, PA; many nieces and nephews, and his beloved pets Muffin, Cleo and Missy. Also surviving is his former wife and friend Linda Hunter-Conklin of Branchville.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Tuttle Funeral Home 272 Rt. 10 Randolph (tuttlefh.com). From 1-2PM with a Memorial Service following at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers donations in Bill’s memory to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
