Obituary of Sophie Abucewicz Golis

Sophie Abucewicz Golis, a long-time resident of Bowie, Maryland and mother of five children, died peacefully on Friday, July 30, 2010 at Regency Grande Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Dover, New Jersey at age 86. She is survived by a brother and sister, five children, five grand children and six great grandchildren. Mrs.Golis served in the Cadet Nurse Corps administered by the U.S. Public Health Service during World War II. She was the first married student to graduate from the Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing in Alexandria, Virginia. She later worked as a nurse at military installations, including the Army Distaff Hall in Washington D.C., and Perry Point Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Havre De Grace, Maryland. She specialized in caring for people with tuberculosis and Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Golis was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on July 31, 1924. Her parents, Antoni Abucewicz and Kazimiera Jagusiak, emigrated from Poland. She was raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts with her younger sister, Mary Ann Kutt, and her younger brother John Anthony Adler, both of whom she leaves behind. Sophie was predeceased by two brothers, Zygmund who died at age 7, and Edmund, who died at age 12. After graduating from Lawrence High School, Mrs. Golis served in the Cadet Nurse Corps from 1942 to 1944. She was married Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Joseph Francis Golis in 1946 and they moved to Washington D.C. Mrs. Golis then continued her training in nursing and graduated from Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing, Alexandria Virginia on May 21, 1956, with a R.N. degree. They bought a new home in Bowie, Maryland in 1962, where they raised their five children, and she worked as a nurse at Glenn Dale Hospital. Mrs. Golis was an accomplished domestic seamstress and was always industrious with needlework, crafts, and cooking. She also loved dancing to music of the big band era and was a devoted grandmother. Mrs. Golis is survived by children Stephan Charles Golis, Paul Robert Golis, Christine Ann Golis, Kenneth James Golis, and Elizabeth Marie Talbert, grandchildren Kelly Klein, Carrianne Doughty, Lauren Golis, Valerie Humphreys and Sophie Talbert, and great grandchildren Nicole Klein, Molly Klein, Logan Doughty, William Klein, Luke Doughty, and Megan Doughty. A memorial service will be held in October in Maryland.
