Obituary of Irene B Whitmore

Please share a memory of Irene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On Saturday, February 24, 2024, loving mother, aunt, and proud grandmother and great grandmother, Irene Whitmore of Dover, passed away at 95 years of age.

Irene grew up in Millburn with her sisters, Dorothy (Flood) and Ruthy(Lyon) who enjoyed spending summers at their family’s bungalow at Lake Hopatcong.  She worked as an Executive Secretary for Allied Signal in Morristown while raising her children and retired from Direct Mail Services in Dover.  An avid reader, she enjoyed murder mysteries and romantic novels.  She kept her mind sharp by doing crosswords, sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles.  Irene was also a very talented amateur seamstress who crafted many beautiful quilts as well as clothes for her and her family.  She also knitted and crocheted blankets, sweaters, etc. Some of which she gifted to the hospital maternity ward.  A widower and fiercely independent, she lived on her own, in her home for over 60 years, since the passing of her husband, James.

She is survived by her children, Jerry, Craig, and Susan, their spouses, Mary Ann, Karen, and David respectfully, her grandchildren, Craig, Chris, Michael, Jeremy, and Michael, and her 5 great grandchildren.

If you wish to make a donation in her memory, please direct them to either St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice 99 Sparta Avenue Newton, NJ 07860
