Obituary of Archbishop Herbert Monroe Groce

Archbishop Herbert Monroe Groce Jr., SSC, DD, STD, of Jefferson Township passed away suddenly Monday, September 20th, 2010 at Saint Clares Hospital, Dover. Archbishop Herbert was born in Philadelphia, PA and has resided in Jefferson Township for the last 33 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was an Archbishop for the Episcopal Church of the United States. He had his doctorate degree in Theology. He was ordained as a priest at the Catherdral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Member of the American Legion Post #91 of Wharton, Grand Chaplain of the F. & A.M. of New York State, Chaplain for the Knights Templar International. He was also active nationally in the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Vice-president of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Director of Operations for the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. Survived by Linda, his beloved wife of 32 years; two sons Eric of VT and Herbert Monroe Groce III of Las Vegas, NV; three daughters Cheryl Groce-Wright of Richmond, VA, Karen Groce-Horan of MA, and Lauren Groce of N.Y.C., NY. Also survived by six grandchildren and his sisters Lillian and Louise; his brother and sister-in-law Dr. Ira and Eva Jacobs and many nieces and nephews. Visitation Thursday, September 23, 2010, 1 - 2 p.m. and 5 - 9 p.m. at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 State Route 10 West, Randolph. Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home Friday, September 24th, 2010, 10:00 a.m. (www.tuttlefh.com). Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in his memory to a charity of your choice.
