Former Learner posted a condolence

Reading through the tributes, it's surprising to not see any posted on here from Villa Walsh academy where he taught for so many years.
For those who may not know, Jim was totally at ease in front of a classroom. He was self-assured and calm, so calm, as he taught. Few others knew US history as well as him. Fewer still had his gift to recount the past for his students in a manner which effortlessly wove together multiple dynamics and made clear what the textbooks occasionally obscured in excess detail.
It was his quiet confidence, his altogether pleasant demeanor, his unrushed manner, his unspoken self-assurance, and his gift of story-telling (even when his lectures veered from history into fishing) that I will most remember.
Villa Walsh academy has lost one of their best, and will be hard-pressed to find another teacher with such a passion for history and who is so naturally gifted at teaching it.
May the angels carry you forth, Jim.

I “worked” for Jim from 2008 to 2021. He was never a boss but always a friend. I started by tying flies for the shop and he always encouraged me in my endeavors. I joined the “team” in 2009 and worked the shop for a couple of days a week, guided for him and eventually head guide.
I shared many an afternoon laughing with him as we watched videos on YouTube. I can’t think of any organization that is defined by it’s leader as much as Shannon’s. Jim was Shannonsfly and Shannonsfly was Jim. He spent so much of his time coordinating with the stewards of the river. He would push for conservation of all the local waters in the state. He educated his customers on how to best preserve the fish and fishing in these waters.
I will miss him every time I release a trout into our waters.

I first met Jim about 16 years ago. I was recently retired and moved to South Jersey and found the Toms River TCA and I also found out my old 9 foot fiber glass rod was not suitable for the tight overgrown conditions. The river was baffling to me, no fly hatches, tons of deep underwater snags making up stream nymph fishing almost impossible. I saw some information on Garden State Trout that Shannons was a great fly shop so I called and it was my good fortune Jim answered the phone. He listened carefully and said nothing till I finished describing my situation. When I was done he said that spending the kind of money I was thinking was not necessary as a seven and a half foot 5 weight would be perfect for the tighter conditions, the need to roll cast and fish the heaver bead head buggers necessary to get down deep. He explained sink tips, short heaver leaders for the snags. So I rode up and for less than a hundred and twenty dollars I took home Jim's recommended rod, some sink tip leaders, 3x tippet and a half a dozen buggers. Before I left Jimmy put on his teachers hat and spend considerable time explain loop knots and fishing techniques specific for the Toms. Quite frankly Jim could have recomended equipment costing five times more and I would have purchased and he also could have quickly said thank you and good by after ringing up the sale but that wasn't Jimmy's way. God Bless you Jim and may you rest in Eternal Peace the Good lord knows you have earned it. Bill Praschil

I knew Jim through my dad, Carl Bottomley. Jim took my boys to the River one evening to watch the fish come up. We had a real sense of his love for nature and fishing in particular. Now and then Jim would play his guitar on Facebook, probably my only good memory of FB. There was a positive and calming energy he shared. I’m so heartbroken for him and for you, his family and friends, I will miss him so very much. You will be always in my prayers. May God bless you.
My sincere condolences, Cheryl

I sit here in shock this morning, totally in shock. Jim never mentioned his battle to me. I am at a total loss for words and heartsick. So many memories come flooding back, his kindness, his gentle spirit, our shared cigarettes, and coffee. His passion for conservation and the sport he so dearly loved. He was respected, loved, and cared for by many, in both his business and personal life. His desire and the pleasure he took in seeing his students succeed. In the most generous way, he reached out to people, always there to be a friend. He left a legacy, a deep abiding legacy to all of us who knew him, those memories will not fade, he was far too important to all of us. Thank you, Jim, for all you were to all of us ~ a treasure, a beautiful human being. Tight lines my friend, Carl Bottomley, Aiken, SC

who we are:
Tuttle Funeral home was designed as a funeral home by funeral home architects and designers. Unllike many funeral homes that were originally old homes and then were converted into funeral homes.
Though it was designed as a funeral home, it still provides the warm comforting feeling of a home, but with more space and an open feeling.
